I Always wanted to Live there But didn't think I could
This post was inspired by Debbie Reynolds post I Never Thought I could Live in That Neighborhood.
I had been working on several thoughts for Lisa's Love is in the Air challenge when I read her post. I realized she was telling the story of my own dream.
In 2008 we sold our Beach house on Fort Myers Beach. I had loved that house my whole life. It was 150 feet from the water. Built in 1927, it had the original claw foot tub. The walls and flooring throughout were solid wood.
It was small, 900 square feet, but just perfect for a week long get-away. My grandfather bought it just after the Depression so you know we had lots of fond memories there.
But the Recession had started and it became no longer affordable. The taxes and insurance were sky high. So with a heavy heart, I agreed it was time.
I had one condition though. We had to move from our current neighborhood. Things had started changing. People weren't keeping up thier homes or their yards and we were often sad driving to our home.
Thus, began the search. We search high and low from south Nashville to South Franklin and everything in between. For over 2 years we searched.
I had several Realtor friends watching. There were 2 neighborhoods we continued to revisit. Each time something came on the market we rushed to see it. Most were either too expensive, or needed too much updating. The price had to be just right to be able to afford the house and still update it.
Finally, my walking partner told me she was listing a property in my favorite neighborhood. The gentleman had just put his wife in a nursing home and was going to assisted living himself.
I got to see it while he was contemplating what to do with the house. It too needed lots of updating. But it was calling me. The backyard was perfect. Lots of mature trees and very private.
While we waited and watched a house in the other neighborhood came on the market. It too had lots of possibilities. I showed them both to my husband and he preferred the other one.
Finally the first one came on the market, priced a bit high. This confirmed my husband's thought that we should purchase the other house. We revisited both and spent a long afternoon in our own yard listing the pros and cons of each.
We'll save you the boring details but eventually he agreed to write an offer on the one I wanted. I just had to set a maximum amount I was willing to pay and promise not to go over it.
A few days later we were under contract. Love was in the Air!
