Brentwood TN Chinese Worship Service is Official at Brentwood Baptist Church!
Brentwood Baptist Church's Chinese ministry has begun to meet on Sundays in the new Baskin Chapel. They are currently being led by Scott Harris, the missions minister. The sermon is being preached in English while Sun Lu interprets for him. They are currently seeking a Chinese minister for this new ministry.
"The Chinese word is very condensed. It can capture in one word in Chinese that is a paragraph or several sentences in English. When we say it in Chinese, it reveals to us a deeper meaning, so that's why it's important to worship in Chinese" said Suk-Lee Winsor, a founding member of the Chinese ministry as quoted in the Tennessean.
While the group of 80 have a weekly Bible study on Sunday mornings, their service is only taking place once a month. The other Sundays they attend the regular services at the Church. Their long term goal is to grow their membership and have weekly worship services.
They families children are all deeply emersed in the English culture but for obvious reasons want to make sure that they don't loose their connection to their Chinese culture.
This group started at Brentwood Baptist Church in 2004 with 4 families.
The Chinese ministry is one of many at Brentwood Baptist Church. There are very strong Hispanic and Deaf ministries. There is a Deaf Church attached to the main Church on Concord Road.

It is exciting to see the rich blend of cultures in our area and how our community and places of worship adapt. It all helps make Middle Tennessee a welcoming place to people of all backgrounds.
Pamela - I have been to the Deaf Church. It's very interesting because the Deaf Pastor signs to the congregation and a lady in the congregation interprets out loud. The music is there, but the deaf "feel" it in the floor because it vibrates.
Thom - This is where I go to church. They are very active in "planting" new churches. This Chinese Church will be the 4th since I started there 3 years ago.
Mike - It really does. I teach ESL at Brentwood Baptist on Fridays. The Tennessean said that the asian population has been growing by 2-3% over the past few years in Williamson county.

Hi Connie! Interesting. I also just learned why Chinese are smarter than us--they can condense a paragraph into ONE word! Hmm... I could have gotten through a whole lot more books in college that way! Maybe I should learn Chinese! LOL

Ann - They just finished the "Connection Center". It is a coffee shop with free internet and 2 3 on 3 basketball courts!

I recently learned that our language has way more words than many others, and it's fascinating to think that one Chinese word can convey an English paragraph? I would love to have the time to study other languages.....I took French for many years but can't imagine trying to speak it. I think people that have mastered more than one lanquage must be geniuses!

Ann - it really depends on the language. Latin based languages are not all as hard as you think. It helps if you live in the country and have people to talk to!
