My Chicago Husband is now a Wimpy Nashvillian!

My Chicago Husband is now a Wimpy Nashvillian!

Fifteen years ago my husband took early retirement and fulfilled a promise to bring me back to Nashville. He liked the area and liked the climate. Our first winter was rather mild but there was a day that we got a half of an inch of snow. TheSweet Pea weathermen had predicted more and the schools were closed. I worked from home and remember well overhearing his conversation with an old friend in Chicago MAKING FUN OF US! Can you imagine!

Well 15 years later, he's worse than I ever was. Yesterday they predicted that it would start this afternoon between 2 and 3pm and that we would get 1 to 2 inches. He fretted about whether I should take Sweet Pea to Pup Scouts or if she should just stay home. I convinced him that it would be fine and I'd leave the office at the first sign of snow or rain and get her and bring us both home.

Snow in Middle Tennessee

At noon today he called to tell me he was going to get her. Well, sorry dear, I paid for a whole day for her to play with her friends and was not cutting it short because he was worried about the weather.

"No Dear", I said. "I'll pick her up". I promised to leave the office by 2 or sooner if it started doing anything. I ran out to do an errand around 1 and it was misting pretty well. Then  I saw a few snow flakes. I finished my errand returned to the office and got my laptop. I had blogs to write, after all.

I picked Sweet Pea up at Pup Scouts at 2 and headed to the pharmacy and to pick up some wine. Can't get snowed in without wine. It's 2:30 by now. I come out of the store and my phone has a frantic message about getting home!

Geez, it hadn't even started sticking yet.

As a former Chicagoan myself, I can appreciate his point of view.  Having lived in DC for 15+ years now, I've become pretty thin skinned ;-)

Sounds like your husband is a quality gentelman!  i'm sure there are many out there very jealous of you!

As a Southern California native, I think your husband has come over to the enlightened side.  We are at 72 degrees through the day here.

Marcie - I'm the one that taught him to be careful in the snow here! I know not to do stupid things which is why I hit the road at the first sign of anything. I'm only 5 minutes from home so it's hard for too much to happen if I leave on time.

Simon - He is, but it cracks me up how he's changed!

Lisa - If only! Spring will not get here too soon this year. This is our 4th snowfall and they're predicting more Sunday night. We've already had 5 years worth of snow!

I found several things funny about your post: that you moved to Nashville for the "good winters", the idea of a ''Pup Scouts", and that you buy wine at the pharmacy!

We are enjoying sunny 70* weather here in La Quinta today--so we are super spoiled.  Come see us!

Connie... LOL.  It sounds like a lot of people nowadays.  They hear the word *snow* and freak out.  NOT ME!!  I have a suggestion.  Have your husband take a quick visit back to Chicago to see friends over the winter months.  I beat you anything, he'll be glad to come home to the 1/2 inch of snow.

Hubby sure was worried about you and Sweet Pea making it home safely. Having stayed way too late at the office and the snow and roads get worse and worse all the way home - it's really sweet and probably good advice, but we're from Florida :)

This is so funny and heck, your husband needs a hobby like Jr. weatherman! He does sound like a caring guy though!

I have a friend who was accepted at DePaul University and when they went to visit recently, she changed her mind because it was too cold and snowy and well you get it!

Funny!  I bet Sweet Pea doesn't mind a little snow.  Pup Scouts.  How much fun is that?

LOL in Santa Fe, NM. Snow can change people, but as for dogs, no way. After all, there is Pup Scouts.

Hey Connie, I'm from Chicago and have been in Alabama for five years...I STILL MISS THE SNOW AND COLD!!!  I know it sounds strange, but I'm a cold weather person and don't do well in hot weather...I know...so what am I doing in Alabama?

I also have those conversations with my buddies back in Chicago and I'm sure my new southern friends are tired of hearing about it.  So sorry to hear hubby has turn into a wimp :))

Hi Connie, Sweet Pea is SO cute!  What in the world is pup scouts?  It's cold (in the 20's and 30's for the next couple of days) and dreary here in the Houston area.  When it's cold here, I think it feels colder because of our humidity -- it's a damp cold.  I'm ready for spring!

Connie, I think your adorable Sweet Pea deserves to be FEATURED! :)  Our dog Sophie loves to have playdates with neighbor Maggie next door.  It is truly fun to watch them enjoy one another's company!

Sweet Pea is adorable. I can understand why he was so worried about her y'all! LOL! ♥  I love Chows! Mine's name is Zsa Zsa.

Funny blow by blow on your husband's fretting about the snow.  Sounds like he needs something else to occupy his time and energy----maybe a part time job?  I love your dog!

Funny Connie, it's amazing how we adapt to comfort!  Pup Scouts...never heard of it but I love it!

Hahaha.  My husband drives in all day if it snows, but I've never seen anyone so attached to the Weather Channel as he is!

Kathy - I lived in Nashville when we were dating. He would come see me here and couldn't believe the weather. Of course that was a mild winter that year! Pup Scouts is a god send. Keeps Sweet Pea out of her comfort zone. It's what the vet said she needed. I bought the wine at the liquor store. They were 2 separate stops! LOL

Valerie - No joke! Really he's not usually that bad but yesterday...

Lee and Carol - It really was sweet but sometimes he hears what he wants to hear. They always said afternoon and that's what happened. I was home long before it even started accumulating on the roofs!

Russell - I know it sounds like I was complaining, it really was funny to me!

Posted by Connie Harvey Realtor Nashville TN Real Estate (Pilkerton Realtors) over 1 year ago

Ann - Sweet Pea is a little Chow Chow. She doesn't mind the snow. She's a little prima donna though!

Emily - She's been going since she was 6 months old. She's very skittish and this makes her be around people without me. She loves the other dogs. :)

Nick - YOU KNOW exactly what I'm talking about!!!! It's a lot hillier here than Huntsville that does make it a little more treacherous.

Joyce - It's puppy day camp. She only goes on Thursdays. Who could afford more than that! It was the same cold damp before the snow yesterday. That chills me to the bone. I hate it!

Adrian - A nice Savignon Blanc! I even changed the dinner menu at the last minute from Mexican to my favorite tuna pasta!

Sonja - Thank you. She's a mess. I was playing with Fototrix online a while back and made that picture. I gave it to them at Pup Scouts and it's still hanging on the announcement board in the foyer! When Oliver comes to visit his grandmother next door, sometimes they play. I wish she could do it everyday. Such good exercise!

Joni - This is our second Chow. Let's see a picture of Zsa Zsa!

Connie, sounds like he has been Nashvillized. Amazing, they let schools out early because it "was" coming.

Enjoy your time at home.

Kirsten - Doing the 31 day Challenge... Yesterday I was challenged and this was the result!

Laura - you probably have something like it and just don't know it!

Virginia - I'm developing a sense of humor in my blog!

Posted by Connie Harvey Realtor Nashville TN Real Estate (Pilkerton Realtors) over 1 year ago

Missy - He really has. The school thing was years ago. They are much better at predicting now. Metro has already gone over their snow days for the year so they wouldn't cancel the schools until 2am when they sent their special drivers out to check the roads. They're canceled now.

Posted by Connie Harvey Realtor Nashville TN Real Estate (Pilkerton Realtors) over 1 year ago

LOL Connie. Sounds a lot like the folks here in Northern Virginia. One inch of snow is the end of the world and they will close schools for anything!

I enjoy reading the stories from those of you from the south and your adventures with the snow lately.   I bet Sweet Pea is loving playing in it!

Aaron - Really that's what I've always liked about it. I forced day off! Now with laptops you still get work done.

Steve - Believe it or not she doesn't love it like some dogs. She'll go out but she doesn't have that "happy thing" going on !

Remind him it's not he whom he needs to fear nor the weather, but our hometown friends that did not grow up with the snow.  That's why the big storm here in 2003 stranded so many for 12 hours.... At least it's not that bad out there now Connie.

Have a great day

Connie, sure I understand that and of course they use very little salt here, another thing is that many of the roads are one lane with no shoulders...there are plenty of reasons why snow and ice impact this area let alone most folks are not used to that kind of driving.

Posted by Nick T Pappas - Madison and Huntsville Alabama (Assoc. Broker ABR, e-Pro, @Homes Realty, Huntsville AL) over 1 year ago

Joe - By 2003 we had learned our lessons and just stayed home!

Mary - NOOOOO! I am not putting a Buyer, any Buyer, in my car when it snows. Too much liability. Like Joe said, #28, it's the other drivers you have to worry about.

Nick - Yes, the ice is the worst. The snow melts but not enough to dry the road and then it all freezes overnight. Very ugly in the morning!

My sister is the same way - born & raised here in New England but now lives in Virginia.  She can't handle the cold weather anymore!

Hi Connie. LOL! Yeah… we husbands can get a little wimpy as the years go by. (Though maybe your husband was thinking about enjoying a glass of wine with you while sitting by the warmth and soft glow of a crackling fire as it snowed outside?)

Christine - I warned him this would happen. I still do what I did when I lived here before. No fear just be careful!

Bill - Great thought but probably not a noon!!! LOL

Connie, what a cute post!  Glad that you and Sweat Pea made it home safely to Jim...  Did you guys get hit hard with the storm?

Posted by Lee & Pamela St. Peter Raleigh Realtors® Raleigh North Carolina Homes for sale (Prudential YSU Realty - (919) 645-2522 ) over 1 year ago

Pam - I can't get over the snow we've already had this winter. No Last Thursday wasn't that bad but there were still patches of ice on Saturday and Sunday. Last night we got snow again. They predicted 3-6 inches but we only got one. The streets were warm enough that I was able to go out at 9:30 to workout. Schools were closed though.
