Walk 100 Miles with Mayor Dean!
Nashville Mayor Karl Dean has challenged the citizens of Nashville to walk 100 miles with him before July. The Metro Public Health Department began the NashVitality Campaign with the desire to inspire Nashvillians to eat better, exercise more and develop making healthier choices. These walks will be a part of this campaign.

Started Saturday April 2nd, with a 3 mile walk around Bicentenniall Mall the walks, 28 in all, will be every Saturday, and during the week at different locations. The last walk will be 9 miles at Shelby Bottoms on July 9th.
To sign up go to www.walk100miles.com and track your progress.
You can walk with Mayor Dean and the group on Saturdays or do it on your own. Everyone who completes the 100 miles will be invited to attend a free concert on July 9th to celebrate this great accomplishment!
"Over the years, we have built up a park system with 192 miles of paved and
primitive walking trails, including 46 miles of greenways" Karl Dean said. "We're going to be walking a lot of them."
Tennessee is one of the most Obese states in the country. It's nice to see that Nashvillians want to change this. The NashVitality Campaign is funded by a federal stimulus grant to fight Obesity. The Metro Health Department received $7.5 million and is using it to promote healthier choices in our Schools, Churches, workplaces and neighborhoods.
Getting started is easy. Grab your walking shoes and a friend and head out the door. We have some older posts on some of the great places to walk in the area.

Connie...what a great initiative that Mayor Dean has taken on. He's right we are an obese nation and Tennessee is leading the way, which is NOT a good thing! I'm glad that he has taken a stand and I hope you have alot of participation!
Connie- I love that the Mayor is leading the way. All of us can walk more, and it's not just Tennessee that's overweight or out of shape. The best thing my husband and I did for ourselves over 3 years ago was to walk every morning. If we don't walk, we bike or anything to get out and be mobile. Good for you and great post!
Kim - I'm training for the Country Music Half Marathon in April. I should have my 100 miles in by then!!!
Kathy - I like that you do it together. Makes you keep at it better. My husband walks too slow and I get frustrated.
Hi Connie - What a terrific motivator Mayor Dean is for the community.
Nice post. This is a great time to get outside and involved in walking or other activities.
Connie...that is great. I could walk ALL day but I'm not much of a runner. I do have a 38 mile, 3 day backpacking trip beginning in 11 days. I can't wait!
Connie...this is a great localism post and also a great challenge by your mayor!
Conrad - Mayor Dean has been great for our city. He's been hosting monthly walks for a long time now.
Yvonne - Normally I would have already done 10 miles this week. I'm in turmoil and haven't done any!
❧ Connie, this is such a great idea! Barney and I have been out trying to walk more ourselves. Does Sweet Pea accompany you on your runs? I like the idea of setting a goal in miles by a certain date... I'll have to work on that.
When's your ½ marathon this month?
Pamela
Kim - OMGosh! 38 miles. You've got to be in good shape to hike that much.
Christine - Mayor Dean is great. He's going to whip us into shape!!
Pamela - We all missed you last week! Sweet Pea is lazy. She can't go far enough to go with me on the long runs. I'm walking a lot these days. Just don't seem to be up for running.
Connie,
It is the perfect time of the year to start something like that and all of us could use some exercise. Great way to show off and publicize your greenways, too. We have great trails and greenways....I need to check them out soon!
Connie... What an awesome thing to do!!! I love walking & that is so encouraging!!! Are you participating? It sounds like you are, good for you :)
Mary - The weather is surely making this very attractive!
Christina - I'm actually training for the Country Music Half Marathon. I will have no problem getting my miles in.
Connie, What a great role model for exercising. I hope he helps to change peoples lives by helping them get into a routine of walking. That's great!
Gloria
Gloria - I've sighned up for it because I want to see how much participation he gets. I'll do a post when it's over.
What a great community on-going project Connie, hopefully it keeps growing and evolves into something more even when it is complete.
Steve - I am anxious to see how it turns out.
