Tennessee Baptist Children's Home turns 100! Celebrate by Participating in Run4Kids tomorrow, May 14th!
In April of 1911 the ministry purchased the land on Franklin Road in Brentwood from C.T. Cheek and the Orphans home moved to its current location.
Originally founded by Mrs Georgia Eastman and a ladies group from First Baptist Church in Nashville in 1891 it was known as the Tennessee Baptist Orphans Home. It was located in West Nashville in the Delaware Hotel.
The Tennessee Baptist Children's home has 6 campuses throughout the state of Tennessee with its headquarters here in Brentwood.
The Brentwood campus sits on 70 acres and has 10 homes which can each house 6 to 8 children. There is a set of houseparents in each house. "Our Number one objective is to reunite the family" Millsaps says. "Sometimes a stay is as short as 6 weeks. It could be six years." He tells us that the average stay is actually closer to 2 years.

Connie...being a Southern Baptist I've known about the Children's Home in Brentwood but didn't realize that it is that large and is a 'temporary' place for these children. I just assumed that most of them were there until they were adopted out.
Kim - Up until recently, I have volunteered there on a regular basis. Many of the kids are "not adoptable". Basically they have family who have not given up their rights, but for one reason or another, they can't take care of them right now. Besides, it's hard to adopt out teenagers and many are in that age group.
That's sad. I'm glad there is a ministry out there to help out with those older children/teens that don't have a home with their families.
Kim - It is sad. Some of the parents are sick or in jail, with addictions and other things. Sometimes the grandparents just can't take care of them. TBCH will send them to college if they want to go and has appartments on campus that they can use after they "age out" of the system. Isn't that a horrible term?
It's wonderful that the Tennessee Baptist Children's Home is there for them, Connie. That's quite an accomplishment-100 years of nuturing children that really need it.
Toni - They take no State money so everything they do is done through their own fundraising. It's truly a special place, I assure you.
