I received an email from Jane about Elephant Abuse with links to different sites. </big></big></span></big></span></p> <p><span><big><span><big><big>Without going into lengthy detail, in my frustration, I took the post down and then wrote another post on <a href="http://activerain.com/blogsview/2760673/free-speech-does-that-mean-you-can-say-whatever-you-want-in-the-comments-of-my-post-" title="Free Speech">Free Speech</a> and the consumer's right to post negative comments. </big></big></span></big></span></p> <p><span><big><span><big><big>Jane was equally frustrated with comments in both posts. She apologized for how she handled our "encounter" and asked if I would post her first email to me. I suggested she write a Guest piece. She is very passionate about the treatment of these animals, and rightly so.<br></big></big></span></big></span></p> <p><span><big><span><big><big>I now turn the floor over to Jane Myers.<br></big></big></span></big></span></p> <p> </p> <p><big>Many people are surprised to learn that the largest elephant sanctuary in the United States is located on 2700 acres in Hohenwald, TN, 80 miles south of Nashville. Carol Buckley and Scott <img title="The Elephant Sanctuary" src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/8/9/1/3/4/ar132803804743198.png" height="239" alt="The Elephant Sanctuary" width="316">Blais co-founded <a href="http://www.elephants.com/aboutSanctuary.php" title="The Elephant Sanctuary">The Elephant Sanctuary</a> in 1995. They created a place where captive Elephants could have the space they needed to live a humane life and heal. </big></p> <p> </p> <p><big>For 17 years 24 Elephants have called this place home. Some elephants arrived from zoos but many were confiscated by the USDA from circuses because of abuse and Neglect. The Circus Elephants usually arrive emotionally traumatized from years of mistreatment. </big></p> <p> </p> <p><big>Dr Gay Bradshaw holds doctorate degrees in ecology and psychology. Author of <a href="http://www.kerulos.org/projects/elephant_ptsd.html" title="Elephant PTSD">"Elephants on the Edge: What Animals Teach us about Humanity"</a>, Dr Bradshaw has diagnosed several elephants at The Elephant Sanctuary with PTSD from their years of physical and mental abuse as performing circus elephants. </big></p> <p><big>The Elephant Sanctuary is truly paradise on earth for these elephants that were snatched away from their families when they were just babies inducted into circuses as slave entertainment for 30 and 40 years.  <a href="http://www.elephants.com/elecam/" title="The Elephant Sanctuary">Elephants and humans are mirror species</a> especially when in involves emotions, family bonds and they mature at the same age rate as humans. </big></p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p><big>Carol Buckley shared with people the daily lives of these elephants on their journey to recovery or to provide hospice care for the ones that could not be saved. After following the  lives of these elephants for a number of years, I made the decision to dedicate the rest of my life to educating people about the inhumane lives these elephants live, in the name of entertainment.<br></big></p> <p><big><img title="The Elephant Sanctuary" src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/9/1/9/2/0/ar132803810902919.png" height="208" alt="The Elephant Sanctuary" width="450"></big></p> <p><big><br> </big></p> <p><big>Education is essential if we ever hope to stop all the tentacles of abuse that sneak by us in disguise. </big></p> <p><big>Since 1992 Ringlling Bros Circus has had 23 elephant births. They have also had 30 elephants that died decades before they should from foot diseases, from being confined on slabs of concrete, where they stand 24/7 for decades, from arthritis from performing unnatural tricks for their heavy bodies and several from TB, the human strain. </big></p> <p><big>The USDA recently fined Ringling Bros a record <a href="http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare/downloads/FEI_signed_agreement.pdf" title="Elephant Abuse">$270,000 for 24 violations of the Animal Welfare act</a>. These are just 24 among many other violations brought against them in the past over animal care. </big></p> <p><big>One of Ringling's recent violations had to do with Sarah, a 54 year old performing Elephant, that needs ongoing medical care for a serious, chronic condition. <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20110809006100/en/Sarah-Sick-Ringling-Bros.-Elephant-Falls-Collapses" title="Elephant Abuse">Sarah was forced to continue performing despite being ill and falling off the ramp walking into her boxcar</a>. </big></p> <p><big>In 2009 a man named <a href="http://www.ringlingbeatsanimals.com/pdfs/haddockDeclarationRedacted.pdf" title="Sammy Haddock">Sammy Haddock</a> released dozens of photos that he took of Ringling's <img title="Elephant Abuse" src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/6/6/0/6/6/ar13280382166066.png" height="217" alt="Elephant Abuse" width="157">baby elephant training sessions at their Center for Conservation Facility in Florida while employed by Ringling. Mr Haddock describes in great detail the crying and screaming that comes from these babies as they are hooked, jabbed with bullhooks and shocked with electric prods to make them perform the circus tricks. These training sessions happen twice a day and last for months, years or as long as it takes to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECspj0daAlE" title="Elephant Abuse">break their wild animal spirit</a>. </big></p> <p><big>The exotic circus animal abuse is so egregious and well documented that as of November 2011, 15 members of the House of Representatives are co-sponsoring <a href="http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h112-3359" title="Elephant Abuse">H.R.Bill 3359 Traveling exotic Animal Protection Act. </a></big></p> <p><big>Deborah Nelson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter, recently completed a yearlong investigation into Ringling Bros/Feld Entertainment and wrote: <a href="http://motherjones.com/environment/2011/10/ringling-bros-elephant-abuse" title="Elephant Abuse">"The Cruelest Show on Earth"</a>. </big></p> <p><big>The entire circus industry uses the same <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50wBdPhBQGo" title="Elephant Abuse">cruel methods to train their elephants</a>. There are numerous videos showing this abuse during their training. </big></p> <p><big>There is overwhelming evidence connecting animal cruelty with bullying issues and human abuse. Read <a href="http://ele-talking-points.webs.com/cycleofabuse.htm" title="Elephant Abuse">The Toxic Triad: Animal Cruelty, Child Abuse and Domestic Violence</a>. </big></p> <p><big>Once I learned about the inhumane lives that exotic animals live just to entertain me, going to the circus was no fun anymore. I have animals I love and would never allow them to be abused to entertain me. I would rather see wild animals on the National Geographic Channel living in theri natural habitats in Asia and Africa. </big></p> <p><big>Dr. Joyce Poole, an elephant expert and researcher for 37 years states: <em><a href="http://ele-talking-points.webs.com/" title="Elephant Abuse">"How many children would choose to go to the circus if they knew what takes place behind the scenes?...The totally unnatural existence for circus elephants is a travesty and to allow this practice to continue is unjustified and unethical."</a> </em></big></p> <p><big>There is no reason why the circus can't continue on with their human performers but end the exotic animal acts. It is the humane thing to do. It really comes down to, do you and your family love these wild exotic animals enough to give up seeing them up close and personal? It wouldn't do anything. Nothing. Nada. So I tried to turn it off to try turning it on again. Now it won't turn off either. </big></big></span></p> <p><span><big><big>Oh well, I'll deal with it later, I thought. I had an 8am run with Team Rio. We're training for the half marathon. It's Saturday, I have nothing planned but lunch with my husband. We run 8 miles, meet back at the running store to shop (10% of all sales today went to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle TN - that's who Team Rio supports). </big></big></span></p> <p><span><big><big>As I was leaving, close to 10:30, I bumped into a client who I hadn't seen in several years. Do you see where this is going? At birth? <strong>Aren't we born with a trustful nature?</strong> I just ran over to the contest post to make sure I knew the rules and I noticed the baby being tossed in the air. </big></big></span></p> <p><span><big><big>Have you ever seen a baby NOT like being tossed like that? <strong>They Know, without doubt, that you're going to catch them</strong>. It's the purest form of trust that I can think of.<br></big></big></span></p> <p><span><big><big>What causes us to not trust? Is that too much of a blanket statement? Is Trust All or nothing? I can't imagine going through life trusting nothing.  </big></big></span></p> <p><span><br></span></p> <p><span><big><big>Recently an incident here in the Rain created a huge conversation about trust. It involved someone we ALL knew and probably trusted. When the facts were made known to me I thought about them for a day or two. </big></big></span></p> <p><span><big><big>Then, I went to my list of subscriptions and unsubscribed myself. I didn't see any need to keep reading someone who was now on my "not to be trusted" list. Such a small thing that really had no bearing on my life. We were just blogging friends. It didn't hurt me <img title="Trust" src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/2/8/0/9/1/ar132769860819082.jpg" height="275" alt="Trust" width="322">personally, but it was about being truthful. </big></big></span></p> <p><span><big><big>I grew up in a home where being untruthful was 100% unacceptable. Because of that, <strong>it has always been my deepest desire for my clients to know that they can trust me.</strong> They can count on me to do what I say I'll do and to tell them from my heart what I think, when they ask. </big></big></span></p> <p><span><big><big><strong>I want them to be able to tell their friends</strong>, and hopefully future referrals, <strong>that they can trust me to put their interests above all others. One left a nice comment. One emailed me that I had and incorrect fact, <img title="Person Screaming" src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/3/6/2/2/1/ar13275938512263.jpg" height="400" alt="Person Screaming" width="267">which I promptly fixed. </big></big></span></p> <p><span><big><big>Then, the next morning there was another email from someone who does not support any Circus that has Elephants as part of their entertainment. <strong>This person wrote a very lengthy email with several links to stories or videos to backup her position. </strong></big></big></span></p> <p><span><big><big>I emailed her and thanked her for emailing my privately and told her that I appreciated her not blasting me in the comment section. I then told her that I had not yet decided what I would do with the post. </big></big></span></p> <p><span><big><big>I did NOT tell her that <strong>I was actually thinking of taking it down or Updating it after</strong> I followed her links and <strong>verified</strong> the <strong>information</strong> she sent. </big></big></span></p> <p><span><big><big>She responded nicely and I thought we were good. </big></big></span></p> <p><span><big><big>Then late yesterday she popped in to the post and left her hate message <strong>twice</strong>. </big></big></span></p> <p><span><big><big>I'm not saying she didn't have valid points about Elephants being abused.
